Newly Wed Nearly Dead is the downtrodden-but-swinging-up debut album of San Francisco’s Permanent Collection, a bright spot of DIY shoegaze. The best tracks moan the grumpiest, like the lyrically unintelligible closer “Too Late,” or “Matter of Hand,” with the LP’s great chorus Am I supposed to feel something? Am I supposed to even feel? drawled nasally like frontman Jason Hendardy was sunk shoulder-deep in a basement sofa. Production comes from the experienced pair of Monte Vallier and Kramer, producer for Galaxie 500 and Low and bassist for Butthole Surfers and Ween.
